The Federal State of Saxony

Saxony is a federal state in the east of the Federal Republic of Germany. Until 1990, the territory of today's Free State of Saxony was part of the GDR. Around 4.1 million people live in Saxony. The average age is 46.8 years, which is higher than the national average, which was 44.7 years in 2021. The three largest cities in Saxony are Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz. Dresden is also the capital of the Free State and the seat of the Saxon government.
Saxony borders Poland to the east and the Czech Republic to the south. Lusatia, the eastern part of Saxony, has been home to the Sorbs, a Slavic ethnic group with its own culture and language, for more than 1,000 years.
