KWDT intervenes in rural and fishing communities by setting up women's groups as contact points. The measures, which benefit the members and the entire community, are divided into the following thematic areas: Economic Empowerment, Water Supply and Sanitation (WASH), Education and Environment. The areas of health, gender, youth and disability are continuously included.
The economic empowerment programme supports women in the following areas: sustainable agriculture, fishing and fish processing, food processing and trade, access to microcredit. All of this enables them to diversify their rural livelihoods.
The improvement of water supply, sanitation and hygiene through the construction of water sources and the collection of rainwater, the construction of latrines, bathing areas, waste bins for drying dishes, hand-washing facilities in households, schools and communal facilities are complemented by hygiene training and awareness-raising campaigns.
Women are also trained in the construction and maintenance of WASH facilities.
The education programme aims to improve infrastructure in rural and fishing communities and access to WASH facilities in schools. Strengthening the knowledge and skills of adults aims to improve the skills of women and female youth with functional knowledge and skills. This will enable them to make informed decisions and take on both responsibility and leadership roles.
To ensure a healthy life for women, sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as HIV/AIDS are taken into account in the implementation of all activities.
KWDT promotes the social inclusion of all women and female youth in all programmes by always taking gender, disability and youth into account. This ensures that vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities and youth (including male youth) have equal access to opportunities and that KWDT's interventions do not exacerbate the negative effects of discrimination in the planning, design and implementation of programmes.
The environmental project aims to ensure that developments that are promoted are in harmony with the environment. Women are supported to engage in practices that conserve land, water resources and forests.
